Rethinking Waste
To reduce the burden on the environment, we must all re-think the ways we deal with waste. The Waste Hierarchy shows the preferred system for ensuring waste to landfill is kept to a minimum, starting with the three R's, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Reduce
Quite simply buy less and try to avoid excessive bulky packaging. The less waste we start with the easier it is to limit the amount we need to dispose of.
Reuse
Do you need to throw it away? Can you use it for another purpose? Hand-me-downs, garage sales and composting are good examples of re-use. You may no longer have a use for it but someone else might.
Recycle
Many materials you throw away can be recycled; paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, wood, metal, cans etc., should not end up in landfill. Keeping recyclables separate from your general waste will help us to maximise your recycling. Contact us on 01502 712328 for more information about how we can help.
Create
New technology for conversion of waste to usable energy helps to further reduce the burden of landfill. Incineration, Anaerobic Digestion and Gasification are all viable means of processing waste into energy. Our preferred option of a proposed Pyrolysis plant at our site provides a clean efficient means of converting waste to electricity.
Dispose
Once all other options have been exhausted, any remaining waste goes to landfill. This is not a viable long-term option and the Government's policy for annual landfill tax increases will soon make it far too expensive both in terms of what you pay and the long term effect of trashing the planet. As waste to energy becomes an increasingly available option, we hope that the need for landfill can be completely eradicated.
By 2013 landfill disposal tax will be £72 per tonne, leading to an anticipated cost of disposal in excess of £120 per tonne.
This is likely to result in the charge for disposal of an 1100 litre wheelie bin exceeding £20-00, so reduction of landfilll waste at source is vital to minimising costs.

Waste Pre-Treatment
All waste is pre-sorted and pre-treated at our Materials Reclamation Facility (MRF) prior to disposal, eliminating the requirement for separate bins at customers' premises. Recyclable materials should be separately bagged, or left loose in bins, for ease of identification and processing, in order to maximise recycling.
Our materials reclamation facility (MRF) holds recycling areas for:
- Washed plastics
- Mixed glass
- All paper
- Mixed cardboard
- All cans/metals
Where possible we recycle any material received.
These materials are collected by UK recycling companies and recycled into otherproducts..As recyclable waste currently represents a high percentage of disposed waste, thisdramatically reduces the amount of waste going to landfill.
Recycling Process
- Stage 1 Once tipped materials are initially hand sorted to remove recyclables
- Stage 2 After initial visual and manual sorting, material is passed through a picking station for further separation
- Stage 3 Remaining materials are then passed through a shredder with a magnet belt to extract any further metals
- Stage 4 Passed through a Trommel sorter to remove fines
- Stage 5 All removed recyclable materials are transferred to designated recycling area
- Stage 6 Recycled materials are weighed and recorded at least once a month, for preparation of Management Information
- Stage 7 Management Information provided to customer by an agreed date the following month
