New Waste Disposal Regulations
New Waste Regulations 2011

Waste Regulations 2011
The Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011, detail important new requirements for the management of waste.
Waste Hierarchy
With effect from 28th September 2011, all waste producers or waste dealers must confirm that they have applied the waste hierarchy in accordance with regulation 12 of the Waste Regulations. Future documentation, waste transfer notes and Duty of Care Annual Season Tickets will contain wording to confirm that the waste hierarchy has been applied. For those who are not familiar with the Waste Hierarchy, the diagram shows the principle which is as follows:
if possible REDUCE the amount of waste you produce
if you cannot reduce it RE-USE what you can
if you cannot re-use it RECYCLE what you can
if you cannot recycle it use it to CREATE ENERGY
if this cannot be done then DISPOSAL in landfill is the last option
Further detailed information about the waste hierarchy can be found at www.defra.gov.uk/environment/waste/legislation/waste-hierarchy/
Standard Industry Classification (SIC) Codes
Another important change is that all businesses are required to state their SIC code on documentation for collection and disposal of waste. This will be included on Waste Transfer Notes and Annual Season Tickets in order to fulfil the requirement of the regulations.
It is the responsibility of the waste producer to select the correct SIC Code for their business activity and to advise the Waste Carrier (i.e.V C Cooke) in order that the documentation can be completed correctly.
Now I know some of you that have not fallen asleep yet are starting to panic! Don't Worry! We are sure that many waste producers, especially smaller businesses, may not have heard of SIC Codes, let alone have any idea how to work out what theirs is. We can help. The list of SIC codes is rather extensive and may appear challenging if not daunting but we have found the easiest way is to follow the link http://wastesupport.co.uk/sic-codes/ . This will take you straight to a page where you can click drop-down boxes to identify your business activity and obtain your code. You may have to use a bit of lateral thinking if your main category isn't immediately obvious but you should be able to locate the code fairly quickly and easily (certainly more easily than trawling through around 300 pages of the code listings!)
Please do not worry. We have to provide this information to fulfill the legal requirements but we shall try and do this as smoothly as possible. Should you require any help or would like further information, please call us on 01502 712328
